Hi Tombow fans, it’s Mandy from @a_heartened_calling here to show you how to create a Bowtruckle from the world of Harry Potter! These creatures were first talked about in Harry Potter and The Order of the Pheonix, but most of you probably know them from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I thought it would be fun to create one and show how to layer colors with colored pencils. Let’s grab our materials and get started!
MATERIALS
- Tombow Irojiten Pencils
- Tombow MONO Drawing Pencil 2H
- Bristol paper
STEP 1 – Sketch
Using MONO Drawing Pencil 2H on bristol paper, sketch out the shape of the Bowtruckle. The neat thing about this creature is that its body shape doesn’t have perfect lines. In my opinion, this makes it easier for anyone to draw.
STEP 2 – Layer Color
We’re starting by adding our lightest color first. Then you can layer a darker color in each step.
For the first step, use Irojiten Colored Pencil Chartreuse Green from Volume 2 of the Rainforest Dictionary to color in the whole shape. This will be your base color. Then use Ivory Black from Volume 2 of the Rainforest Dictionary to color in its eyes. Leave a little circle in each eye uncolored.
Next, use Irojiten Pencil Moss Green from Volume 5 of the Rainforest Dictionary and add color to the middle of the body and in areas to shadow the body. Leave the Chartreuse Green visible along the edges of the body.
Next, use Irojiten Pencil Elm Green from Volume 3 of the Rainforest Dictionary and layer color on top of the Moss Green you just colored in.
Next, use Irojiten Pencil Cactus Green from Volume 5 of the Rainforest Dictionary and layer color on top of the Elm Green you just colored in.
STEP 3 – Add Finishing Details
Using Irojiten Pencil Chartreuse Green, layer color on top of it’s whole body again. This will help blend the colors all together. Lastly, use Irojiten Pencil Ivory Black from Volume 2 of the Rainforest Dictionary to color in its legs, mouth and to outline the body shape.
Your Bowtruckle is done! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! If you give it a try, be sure to tag us at @tombowusa and @a_heartened_calling so we can see your amazing work!
