In this latest quest to conquer the ‘Old School’ pile it has led me to think about my scrapbooking style and to re-define who/how and what needs be be documented. I’m still working on my ProjectLife for this year (more on that later) but overall what is ‘caught-up’ to you? I think Over the years my version of it has changed and evolved to fit me and my changing family. It no longer means that the latest pictures are preserved, it is starting to be the milestones of memories are captured and savored. The little details of design still fit me and I still enjoy that creative outlet but the layouts that are actually getting done are either a) more heartfelt or b) simplified. While there were other snapshots of my husband’s school years in his old photo box, it was the main ones that I was drawn to, the ones that showed his growth and the a little bit of his personality. I still treasure all the others but, after 20 (or 30+) years there were some things that didn’t matter, and others that were still profoundly important to record and remember.

That’s another one of the great things about this little hobby/passion of mine. So much of it makes me realize what matters, what’s important and how we’ve all changed. I like the self discovery aspect that automatically occurs when you sit back and take a moment to remember.

While whiteboards, laptops and iPads are the new chalkboards and textbooks the classics will always endure the trends. For my husbands school album I decided to stick with a few school staples as my main elements and embellishments. The black/white Combination of a chalkboard (the MONO White Gel pen works perfectly for this!), corkboard accents (MONO Powerbond is the absolute best on this!) paperclips, stencils, shipping tags and twill with classic school colors and old-school photo corners. Take a look- and don’t forget to e-mail me or post on Facebook your latest school projects!

Back to School isn’t always about homework and bad pictures… sometimes it’s about documenting those awkward years for future generations laughing enjoyment. After all who wants to keep them hidden in a box when so many people would get a kick out of the Rick Astley hair cut or the Miami Vice tight white jeans. Hey, it’s proof that everything comes back in style again eventually, right?

This layout was made just using the Bazzill cardstocks I had in my stash, Tombow’s MONO Permanent Adhesive runner and MONO white Gel pen and my sewing machine. I’ve said it before but I really love the permanent adhesive runner for stitching, and this layout has A LOT of that! I also had a lot of memorabilia of my husbands that was too great not to keep so I scanned in things like report cars, artwork, band music and yearbook pages and slipped them in his ‘student file’ in the form of tags. More sewing there with just a few journaling notes.

Keep those school layouts coming, we’d love to post them and get a little insight into what “Back to School” means to you! Fune giveaways up for grabs too- email me your projects and contact info to jjwallace at me dot com or jwallace at tombowusa dot com.

From Debbie’s Altered TP Tube to My Dainty Birthday Card…
I was inspired by Debbie’s idea for pulling something out and then I used her layout design as the basis for my card. Instead of a flower, I added a tag and some Pink Paislee pleated twill with a string instead of a ribbon.
For my Debbie inspired envelope I used cardstock and MONO Permanent adhesive runner and cut out a flower shape at the top so the card could peek through (and since I was going for an ultra girly look I added a Dual Brush Pen colored flower for good measure!)

the inside of the card is super simple with just a few DBP colored flowers and a little MONO White Gel Pen magic.

It’s been so fun to see everyone’s individual style come out. I love how everyone see’s a piece differently and highlights their favorite elements. Thanks for joining us on this fun inspiration everywhere project! Enjoy your weekend!

“tangle” supplies;

Tombow MONO Adhesive Dots , Tomobw Dual Brush Pen – N15 black , Tomow White Gel Pen

the idea of the “ZENTANGLE” is interesting to me. all those doodles in
the notebooks of my college classes actually have a name now! well, unfortunately i am
not much of a doodler now, but i took inspiration from the zentangle
and put it toward my scrapbooking.

this layout was inspired by the doodling now called zentangle. Both the pattern paper blocks on the page and the title were a result of the research i have done concerning zentangle. the result is a fun technique that fits my style. i’m coining my own phrase and calling it a “scrap-tangle”!

using coordinating pattern papers (all of mine came from OCTOBER AFTERNOON’s recess line) i cut (mostly) straight lines from one of the pattern papers. then using the other coordinating patterns i filled in a 4″ square piece of white cardstock. the final result is similar to the different doodling one might do with they were creating their own zentangle.

*tips* (because i tried this three different ways)

*you can doodle a zentangle first.
i took my 4″ square piece of white cardstock and drew directly on it first.
then using a piece of vellum i laid it over the design and traced it.
next i flipped the piece of vellum over onto the pattern paper i wanted to use and re-traced the lines on the back side of the vellum.
this will transfer the lead from the front side of the vellum to the pattern paper.
now you have a guide to cut out your shapes out of patterned paper.
a suggestion with this method – number each piece that is traced on the vellum AND on the pattern paper. so when all of your pieces are cut out you can fit it together like a puzzle with a pattern.

*another way to do this is to use scraps pieced together

generously apply adhesive to the background you want to use, again mine was the 4″ square, and then apply pattern paper. i used the Tombow MONO dot runner, as it is a little more forgiving if the pieces need to be adjusted.
then after laying down the background pieces i covered the seams, where the pattern papers came together, with the bold strips.

*keep all of your “bold” strips the same pattern paper. it will keep a cohesive feel to the final piece.

*try to make your bold lines wavy, not always straight

*use your Tombow Dual Brush Markers and ink the edges of the pieces being put together. it makes the “scrapped zentangle” have more definition.

“scrap-tangle”!

When I got this assignment I have to admit…I started out a little bit nervous and spent more time than necessary just thinking about what I should do. I may be other things, but I’m not a “pen” artist…I leave all that drawing business to my husband and boys who are pros. I’m a stick figure and basic map kind of girl, and that’s about it, so this was going to be so hard! Nope, totally wrong. Just getting the pen to the paper was really the difficult part, because once I began I was really surprised to see how easily the design flowed.

I made two gift tags for a few upcoming baby shower gifts using Chipboard pieces, both of them are colored with Tombow Dual Brush Pens first and then allowed them plenty of time to dry well. After they were dry, I went about creating my Zentangle-inspired creation on top of the color with the Tombow Mono Gel White Pen. I’ll punch holes in them and then string organza ribbon through both before I attach them to their bags. The first is an “H”, I wanted to have a doily effect. The second is a tiny round tag, and I was a little more abstract with this one. I like the look of the white over the color, make sure and give that a try! And now that I conquered my silly fear…I’ll be using this technic a lot more now!

P.S. While I was working on these, both my older boys came over and watched and decided they needed to make Zentangles too. I was really impressed with what they came up with…Show your children the basic concept, give them a small paper and a pen, and you’ll be amazed at their creativity!

It’s Team- Up time and this week we listened to your requests! It’s all about Basic Grey!! Check out these great Tombow/Basic Grey cards by Debbie. Remember to posts your comments daily for a chance to win our weekly prize pack!

I love this new Cappella paper by Basic Grey. I received this lovely package with papers, stickers and brads from this line. To me it is very vintage.

Tombow is highlighting their Mono White Gel Pen this month. I used this on both of my cards today.

For this first card, I stamped with a versamark ink pad on a Basic Grey black paper then pierced around the image and then “connected” the dots with the white gel pen. I love how it looks like chalk on a chalkboard. The brads are from another Basic Grey line.

The stamp set is a retired one by Stepping Stones. I used the two smallest flowers and a sentiment.

For this next card I went totally vintage! All the papers are from the Cappella line. The ribbon is from my vintage stash and the lace was white. I rubbed peach ink on it and then spritzed it and rubbed the ink into it more evenly. I love how it turned out!

The mini tag is from SU! from long ago that I still had. The pin is from last month’s Maya Road pkg. I wondered what I was going to do with those pins. They match the Cappella paper perfectly!

I used Tombow’s Mono White Gel Pen to make “eyelet” dots along the peach scallop border. Both cards were put together using Tombow MONO Adhesive DOTS. Thanks for stopping by!

using graphic 45 paper was a wonderful treat. the colors are vibrant and the images tantilizing. they transport you back in time…i am sure that life a few decades ago was not dull and muted, but just as vibrant as this paper!
i love graphic45
i love keeping tickets and programs and little notes.
i love pockets.

…. a perfect match.

i have done many scrapbook layouts that included pockets to keep special trinkets from events and memories.
one of my favorite classes to teach is a technique class around my intrigue with pockets.
here are a few of my ‘go to’ pocket designs….

the most basic of pockets involves a piece of paper and glue. i like to use the Tombow MONO Aqua on my pockets. on a square or rectangle apply glue to three edges, the two sides and the bottom. on the “beach bound” card i used one of the postcard beach scenes from g45′s the boardwalk collection. easy enough to cut it from the paper, apply the adhesive to three side and attach it where i wanted it. then i used the pocket to hold tags with information regarding an upcoming family reunion.

the second card is a traditional card that opens to a message on the inside, but the front has a pocket functions as a gift card holder. the boardwalk collection also has coordinating sheets with punch-outs (as do all of the g45 lines). some of those punch-outs are strips of pattern papers. i removed them from the sheet, cut them into 3 1/2″ strips and adhered them to the card front. this time, i only put the MONO Aqua on the two side edges. the middle is open all the way down, perfect for sliding a tag into the pocket. on this tag i used the Tombow MONO Removable adhseive runner to attach a gift card to the back of the tag. the top of the tag are punched circles adhered together on either side of the tag to serve as a “pull”, to remove the tag from the pocket. i personalized the inside of the card using the Tombow White Gel Pen.

have you seen all the fun video’s on graphic 45′s blog? be sure to look there for more inspiration! oh wait, did i mention i love pockets?

Setting the scene; Not only have I had this chipboard mini album for years in my stash but I’ve also had the pictures for this project sitting on my desk for months. The inspiration to get it all pulled together just wasn’t there. I was boo-ing myself off the creative stage. Enter stage left; PINK PAISLEE’s 365 Degrees. BEAUTIFUL colors, amazing accents and ta-dum! I know I could get it done! I’m now officially convinced that nothing inspires me more than fresh fun product. The cork accents are my fav. Love the texture, the prints… they make me drool. Each page on this is simple. One Picture, One Cork accent attached with MONO Adhesive POWERBOND and some hand-drawn flourishes with our MONO White Gel Pen. In fron of each page is also a journaling spot from the 365 Line as well. Perfect for writing private thoughts about such a memorable day. Curtain Down; Standing ovation! (I’ve been watching too much High School Musical haven’t I?)

This week’s winner is…. Mimi Leinbach! She entered two layouts and BOTH were in our top picks this week. I love how she features her photographs so well in each. The embellishments never take over but are still a main element.

MY BEST- I love the photos in this layout and I love the journaling. So heartfelt and meaningful. Oh and what a creative way to use the October Afternoon Flashcard books! Even those cute bards around the edges are a perfect touch. Honestly it makes me wish I had seen this before I made my layouts.

NATURES BOUNTY- This layout is very inspiring to me. I wouldn’t have thought to use a kraft colored background with the prima flowers like that but it really makes the photographs and the flowers pop. Those flourishes on the corner really balance it all out too. Mimi says her favorite Tombow adhesive is MONO Aqua Liquid Adhesive and that it’s used on every single layout she does. Good Job Mimi and congrats! Check your email, and then your mailbox! It will soon be filled with A 10 pack of Dual Brush Markers, a white MONO gel pen and every single one of our adhesives!

Remember to keep the summissions coming, we’ll do choose another winner next week!
