Hey y’all, I’m Katie from Studio Katie. Have you tried the new Urban Sketching Set from Tombow yet? Keep reading to see how I used this set to illustrate the cutest little Japanese Tea House!
First, Let me tell you what comes in the Urban Sketching Set:
- 3 Tombow Dual Brush Pens, 076, 277, 899
- 2 Tombow Eco Colored Pencils, Gold and Purple
- 1 Tombow MONO Drawing Pen, 005
- 1 Tombow MONO Graph Mechanical Pencil
- 1 Tombow Water Brush, Medium
All in a CUTE tin!
When I first got this set, I fell in love with the tin, because I can already imagine throwing this into my travel art kit for sketching on the go.
I started this illustration by sketching my design on watercolor paper using the MONO Graph Mechanical Pencil, and then inking it with the MONO Drawing Pen. I love the 005 size for urban sketching and field sketching, because you can get fun, fast, sketchy lines with the small nib.
Next, I used the 3 Dual Brush Pens, and the Water Brush to add washes of color over top of my ink drawing. I was initially surprised by the colors in this tin, but after drawing this scene, I found that they were perfect for urban sketching! They mix beautifully to create a range of colors.
I found I could mix 277, & 899, green and brown to make a greenish gray color for the roof of my tea house. Or mixing 076 with 899 to create a lighter brown shade for the wood.
Next, I used the two Eco Colored Pencils included in the Urban Sketching Set to layer over top of my marker layer to add details and texture, or even altering the color.
I found if I lightly layered the purple pencil, over the 277 Green marker, it almost looks blue. Which was perfect for my river.
I used the golden yellow pencil to add texture to the wood and grass of my design.
