How To Turn A Fruit Sketch Into a Watercolor Illustration

Hi all, it’s Carola and in this post, I’m sharing a simple way to turn your favorite fruit sketch into a gorgeous watercolor illustration. One of my favorite creative activities in the Fall is to draw seasonal food and capture the rich and warm tones. I decided to do that with one of the treats that embodies Autumn enjoyment to me – the candy apple.

If you’re interested in documenting Fall-themed vibes, then grab the supplies listed below and create your own Autumn food illustration!

My Process in Creating a Candy Apple Illustration:

First, I sketched a candy apple, using a MONO Graph Mechanical Pencil and included where the highlights and shadows would be. This is helpful when adding color later, so that you know where to leave white space or add depth.

After I sketched the candy apple, I picked out the colors that I wanted to use in my final artwork. In the Citrus set, I went with Dual Brush Pens 885, 925, 055, and 977. I added color by using the Dual Brush Pens on a Blending Palette and then used a paint brush to get the watercolor effect on paper. Blending colors together gives a smooth textural look and reflects the palette in a seamless way.

Optional: if you have a white colored pencil or gel pen, you can make the highlights stand out by drawing it in, on top of the watercolor. You can also add a few more pencil lines on top of the illustration to make it look more like a sketch – I like this look myself. Or you can erase all the pencil lines to make the watercolor look stand out.

There we have it – a candy apple illustration to celebrate the warm tones of Autumn harvest. I hope this inspired you to create your own Autumn-themed painting. If you would like to share it with us, remember to tag  @TombowUSA and @FromCarola on Instagram.
