Create a Minimalist Advent Calendar

Hi fellow crafters – if you enjoy creating your own holiday advent calendar, this project is for you. I’m Carola (@FromCarola) and as a mom to twin daughters, I love minimalist craft projects that are cute and easy to execute in a short amount of time.

Creating this advent calendar was fun because I practiced watercoloring (with Tombow Dual Brush Pens) and hand lettering (using a MONO Twin Permanent Marker.) Since I have two kids who each expect their own daily advent gift, I decided to combine a countdown calendar with a scavenger hunt. Keep reading if this sounds like something you would do…

Supplies Used:

Process for Creating a Minimalist Advent Calendar

Making dated cards: for the first part of this project, I watercolored and cut out cards for the 24 days of the countdown. Pairing two Dual Brush Pens (725 + 757 and 772 + 835) allowed me to blend and paint a gradient-style effect on watercolor paper. The Blending Palette is a useful surface for adding and mixing colors with water.

After cutting down the watercolor paper into 24 cards, I used the broad tip of the MONO Twin Permanent Marker to hand letter each day. Since it’s water resistant, it won’t smear or bleed.

Creating a scavenger hunt: On the back of each card, I wrote a place or room where my kids can find their advent gift each day. This way, the size and number of gifts won’t be an issue, which is great!

To affix each card to a big poster board, I stuck a little piece of Mounting Putty. This putty is so useful in craft projects because a little bit goes a long way to stick things where you want them and then move them around. On the advent calendar, the kids can just pull off the card each day and turn it around for their clue.

For added texture and a fun element, I adhered various sized pom-poms to the board. This is optional of course – you can decorate the board however you’d like.

And that’s it for a minimalist advent calendar! If you create your own advent or countdown calendar, we would love to see it! Share it with us by tagging @TombowUSA and @FromCarola on Instagram.
