Hello Tombow friends! We’re here today with a fun technique by our Signature Designer Marie Browning. She’s going to walk you through how to draw gems with our markers and colored pencils.
Supplies
- Tombow Dual Brush Pens
- Tombow Irojiten Colored Pencils
- Tombow Colorless Brush Blender Pen
- Tombow Sand Eraser
- Tombow MONO Drawing Pencils – 2B & F
Now that you have your supplies ready to go, we’re going to go step by step with how to draw gems using markers and colored pencils to create beautiful shaded effects.
Step 1:
Draw an oval with a permanent black pen (the Tombow MONO Twin Permanent Marker works great for this). Add the light Dual Brush Pen color, leaving a highlight at the bottom. Add the darker Dual Brush Pen color in a crescent form.
Step 2:
With the Colorless Blender Pen, blend the colors together and let dry.
Step 3:
With the Irojiten Colored Pencils, soften the blend. Use the dark color to deepen the crescent shadow at the top of the gem. If needed, use the Sand Eraser to bring back the highlight at the bottom of the gem.
Step 4:
With a white gel pen, add the highlight. Add a shadow under the gem using the Drawing Pencils.

All I can say is…wow.
Thank you for a wonderful gem tutorial as well as all of the color suggestions to make other gems! My question: What is the process and which Tombow tool do you use to make the very thin lines in the finished gem? I feel that is what makes it really look like a gem with the inclusions that naturally form! Thank you for your response.
Thanks so much for this VERY informative tutorial on making gems! I’ve been looking at some online through my zentangle wanderings and decided I really want to try this technique. I already have a large set of Tombow markers so don’t even have to run to the store. Is there a kind of paper that works better than others? Your instructions make it look really easy so I’m going to get at it today. You are so very generous.
