Painting with Scissors… and Glue!

Happy Spring Tombow Friends! This is Jennie and today I’m inspired by Henri Matisse. I am painting with scissors… and glue! I’m going to create a nature inspired canvas using Matisse’s method of painting with scissors.

Supplies:

Step One: Cover the background!

To cover the background, I used tissue paper. I used only one sheet to cut a lot of squares and rectangles. Use the broad tip of the Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue to apply the glue on the background. I like the broad tip because then I don’t have to use and clean a brush! Layer the paper until you are happy with the color and coverage. The tissue paper creates a watercolor effect because is translucent. When you layer tissue paper you can see the layer behind. The more layers you add, the darker the surface turns.

Step Two: Leaves!

Use cardstock or pattern paper to create leaves. I used a Tombow 8900-VP Colored Pencil to draw on the back of the paper before cutting.

You can add details to the leaves. To draw the lines, I used the Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen in Light Green.

Step Three: Layer of Leaves!

Before finally gluing my leaves to the canvas I wanted to arrange them to see how they looked. The Tombow MONO Removable Adhesive allows me to move the leaves until I’m happy with the layout. When all the pieces are in place, glue the leaves with the Tombow MONO Multi XL Liquid Glue.

Step Four: Butterflies!

To get symmetrical butterflies, fold a paper in half and cut it to create a template. I used the Tombow MONO Removable Adhesive on the back of the paper to trace it with the Tombow 8900-VP Colored Pencil. To create the inside of the butterfly, draw inside the template, and cut.

To put the butterflies together I used the Tombow MONO Multi XL Liquid Glue.

Step Five: Finish the Canvas!

I only added Tombow MONO Multi XL Liquid Glue on the center of the butterfly and the dark green leaves. This way, I could bend the wings and leaves to create extra movement.   Paint with scissors and glue! To glue the sequins you should use the Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue which dries clear. The Tombow MONO Multi XL Liquid Glue dries tacky which could be inconvenient if there is excess of glue.
