Whimsical Doodles with Tombow MONO Drawing Pens 1

Hi, friends, I’m Amy from Amy Latta Creations, and one of my signature ways to create is by drawing whimsical doodles. In fact, I’ve even written two books: Doodle Everything and Doodle All the Animals, to share my love for this kind of drawing. Today, I want to show you how to doodle a fun flower and color it three different ways using some of my favorite Tombow art supplies.

Image contains a collage of hand drawn flowers with smiling faces, colored in a variety of ways. The title “Whimsical Doodles with Tombow MONO Drawing Pens” stretches across the center.

How to Doodle a Whimsical Flower

Doodles are so much fun, because they’re not meant to be perfect! Don’t worry about making mistakes, and just have fun creating. Grab your supplies, and let’s get started.

First, use your MONO Drawing Pen to draw a large circle for the flower’s center.

The cheerful face is a focal point of this doodle, so make sure your circle has enough room inside.

Pro tip: Tombow MONO Drawing Pens are perfect for doodles, because they make smooth, skip-free lines, and have a steady ink flow. They’re available in eight different tip sizes (005, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, and 08), so you can choose the perfect thickness for your drawing. Because they are water-resistant and dry quickly, you can color your doodles using your choice of pencils, markers, and watercolors.

Draw six “u” shaped petals around the circle.

Since we are drawing by hand, the size and shape of each of these petals will vary slightly, and that’s more than okay!

Draw a smaller “u” shape inside of each petal.

This will give the petals outer and inner sections, which allows us to use more colors to make the drawing pop.

Draw a curving line for the stem, and add leaves.

I chose to draw two large pointed leaves at the base of the stem, but you can doodle whatever number and shape leaves you like.

Finally, add a simple smiling face.

I like to draw two little arches for the eyes and a “u” shaped smile.

Adding Color with Irojiten Colored Pencils

The first option for coloring in whimsical doodles is to use Irojiten Colored Pencils. Their strong pigments produce really vibrant colors that make my drawings seem to pop off the page. They also work well for blending and layering, like I did with the two shades of blue inside the petals.

Adding Color with Dual Brush Pens

Another way I like to color my doodles is with Dual Brush Pens. For large areas, I use the brush tip end to apply color directly inside the lines I drew. Then, I use the bullet tip end for details and filling in any small sections. Because the MONO Drawing Pens dry instantly, I can start applying color with the Dual Brush Pens right away, without worrying about smudging my doodles.

Adding Color with the Watercolor Marker Technique

If you want to give your doodles a watercolored look without the mess of paints, you can create the same effect using Dual Brush Pens and a wet paintbrush! All you have to do is scribble your marker onto a non-absorbent surface like the Tombow Blending Palette or a simple plastic sandwich bag. Then, dip a wet paintbrush into the ink. This will transfer the color onto the brush’s bristles. Finally, paint your doodle with color. Because the MONO Drawing Pen has pigment-based ink rather than dye-based like the Dual Brush Pens, the lines of your doodle will not smear when they get wet. This makes MONO Drawing Pens and Dual Brush Pens a perfect pair. After the color dries, you can also use the MONO Drawing Pen to add any additional details you like on top.
