Happy Birthday Owl Canvas by Beth Watson 2

Happy Tuesday from the Craft & Hobby Association Show in Anaheim, California!

I am here today to share my super cool Happy Birthday Owl Canvas that I created for the Tombow booth at CHA, but I really had a special Birthday Girl in mind, my Niece, Marlee!  She is all about everything owls and everything purple, so this project will not only greet her birthday guests on the cake table, but will decorate her room long after the party is over.  The gift that keeps on giving!

The palette for this project is based off of the Tombow Dual Brush Pens Bright Set, plus some great Tombow adhesives!

Now on to my project!

1.)  Start with an 8″ x 10″ canvas and using Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue, adhere a piece of ruler paper 8″ by 6″ overlapping the top 4″ of the canvas, so that 2″ of paper hangs off the top.  Use a bone folder or old credit card to burnish the paper to the canvas and remove any bubbles.  The paper will initially ripped very slightly once applied, but when dry the MONO Aqua Liquid Glue actually tightens the canvas – and it drys quickly!  Flip canvas over, draw a half circle, then cut out with craft knife on self healing mat.  Repeat with two strips of ruler paper 3/4″ wide by 6″ tall and attach to sides of canvas.

2.)  Gather scraps of scrapbook paper, cut to 2″ by 3″ with paper trimmer, then round bottom with scissors.  Measure and draw a line 2 1/2″ up from the bottom of the canvas.  Repeat at 4″, 5″ and 6″ up from the bottom of the canvas.  Starting on the edge and folding over to cover the side attach seven “feathers” to the 2 1/2″ line with Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue.  Repeat at the 4″ line, 5″ line, 6″ line and ruler paper edge to create a layered feather effect on the canvas.  I trimmed the top row of feathers to 2″ long to make everything measure out evenly.

3.)  I had these 4″ wide wooden doilies in my craft stash and combined them with 2″ wide bottle caps, punched paper circles and large buttons to create the owl eyes!  Color the wooden doilies with Tombow Dual Brush Pen #665 from the Bright Set.  This is one of the best things I have learned about the Tombow Dual Brush Pens – they color unfinished wood like a stain and dry immediately, so now need to wait for paint to dry!  I love the deep, rich color saturation!

4.)  Layer all the eye pieces and attach with Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue, let dry.

5.)  Attach eyes to top of canvas with Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue.  Cut a triangle from yellow cardstock, then attach in between eyes with Tombow Foam Tape for dimension.  Mark two dots at the top of the beak with Tombow Dual Brush Pen #847.

6.)  Color wood veneer words with Tombow Dual Brush Pens #636, #493, #173 and #743 from the Bright Set.

7.)  Attach words to feathers with Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue, let dry.

8.)  Color two 3 ½” wide stars and two spools with Tombow Dual Brush Pen #847.  Wrap spools with orange gingham ribbon, securing ends with Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue.  Attach spools to stars, then attach to bottom of canvas with Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue.  I have to say that the MONO Aqua has become my go to liquid glue for all of my crafting projects, I am addicted!
