How to Make an Explosion Gift Box

Hi friends, Natalie from Doodlecraft here sharing my last blog post as part of the Tombow Design Team 2020. I have loved being on the Design Team this year and will still use and showcase Tombow products as part of the Brand Ambassador Program. The best part of my year on the Design Team was being inspired by the other team members. In fact, I was inspired by Serena while making this explosion box with gift tag!

Serena Bee is creative and edgy! Her love of layers, textures, and odd elements makes her projects memorable. Like these darling Halloween gift tags.

This explosion box is a fabulous handmade gift and a big and unexpected surprise! It’s packed full of treats, but it could also contain small gifts or a gift card too. Once the lid is removed, it’s tricky to get everything back inside. This makes it a very memorable gift!

Supplies Needed for Explosion Box:

Step 1: Explosion Box

I used my Cricut Maker to cut and score this design found in CDS by searching “explosion box”.

If you are not using a Cricut, this can be made with a ruler and scoring stylus. Begin by scoring a 12×12 piece of paper in nine equal parts. Then, diagonal scoring on the corner pieces, cut the top in a curve shape.

The lid is just 1/8 inch bigger than the base of the gift, with one inch edges on all four sides. Two of the flaps have small tabs.

Fold the paper on all the score lines. Then, glue the tabs on the flaps of the lid using the MONO Aqua Liquid Glue. Let it dry completely.

Step 2: Gift Tag

Now, get lots of brightly colored pieces of paper to layer for the perfect gift tag.

Use the MONO Adhesive+ Permanent to attach the layers of paper. Chanel your inner Serena Bee and layer those colors, patterns and textures!

Then use the MONO Liquid Glue to attach the twine to the edge of the tag.

Add Foam Tape to some punched or hand cut banners.

Then, attach them to the tag near the twine.

Step 3: Stamping

Now stamp or draw your gnome on the cardstock. Stamp it again on some patterned paper, just for paper piecing the hat.

Then, cut out the patterned hat carefully and adhere it to the stamped image using MONO Adhesive+ Permanent.

Add the gnome and a little hand lettered phrase to the tag with the Foam Tape.

Step 4: Fill the Box

Now, fill the box with candy, treats, small toys, gift cards, confetti, even glitter! Use the MONO Adhesive+ Permanent to adhere a few of the treats to the sides of the box. Leave the corner pieces empty.

Then, fold in the corners and hold it together as closely as you can.

Then fill to the brim with more goodies. Again, glitter bomb anyone? Then, slip the lid over the top to hold the box together and contain the surprise!

Tie it up with twine and attach the tag with a hole punch. Now, it’s ready for holiday gifting this perfect handmade gift!
