Subtractive Drawing with Tombow MONO Drawing Pencils and Zero Erasers by Marie Browning 5

This drawing technique is the art of removing. You can quickly create beautiful drawings with the subtractive technique using thin metal stencils, Tombow Drawing Pencils and Tombow Erasers. This is a very different and enjoyable technique and can be used with any stencil image to make appealing little pencil drawings suitable for framing or presenting on a card.

A soft graphite base is added to your paper by using a homemade fabric pouch that has been dipped into graphite rubbed on a piece of sandpaper. I use a 4B Drawing Pencil or softer pencil. Transfer the graphite dust to the paper using a firm circular motion. Repeat two or three times until you have an even soft gray surface.

Use Tombow’s Removable Adhesive and adhere a metal stencil to the paper. The stencil used for the samples are from Dreamweaver Stencils. Using the MONO NP Eraser, firmly erase inside the stencil motif. Go in different directions and press firmly into the small detailed areas. I also used the small detail erasers, Tombow Zero Erasers. They come in a 2.3 mm round tip and 2.5 mm rectangle tip.

Remove the stencil. Don’t worry if you haven’t reached into every little detail, they can be added in with a zero eraser. Using a Tombow F or HB Drawing Pencil, outline the design. Continue to add details to the erased areas.

Use a Tombow B or 2B Drawing Pencil to add additional shading. You may also want to use the zero erasers to whiten any areas. A tortillion (paper shading tool) works nicely to soften any of the shading.  You want to work back and forth with the pencils and erasers to achieve the look you want.

If you haven’t tried this pechnique give it a whirl…it’s fun and with the Tombow MONO Drawning Pencils I feel sure you’ll be happy with the results.

Until next time…Happy Crafting,
