Summer Picnic Plates and a fun Finger Puppet Board Book too!
Ever have projects that are in your mind for a LOOONNGG time before they actually get done? Yeah, that’s me big time. I’ve had this idea for a HOME album since we moved in….. 6 years ago. I had ideas of before and after pictures of what we’ve done with the place, how it’s been decorated and showing off how we’ve turned it from a house into a home…. I’ve done pages here and there but never really sat down and finished it out. The ironic part is that the pages I’ve done need to be added to. 4 years ago I did a LO of my son’s room. Basically that needs to be completely revamped because now it’s less like a nursery and more like a little boy’s room. That’s how it goes, right? You create, you learn, you grow and you document. Life is ever changing and it’s part of the process. This week I’ve been working on updating and creating and I am loving the results of our house transforming into our home.
This Layout is all about our backyard fun this spring. I swear that space outside has turned into another room in our house and I love the sanctuary it gives us. From reading in the hammock together, playing in the playhouse, enjoying countless picnics, building in the sandbox, growing in the garden or flying on the swing it’s our little oasis. For the branches I grabbed a few backyard twigs and used Tombow MONO Adhesive DOTS for a quick hold while I stitched it firmly in place then I added a little texture with some fleece from my sewing stash and added some grass/leaves with Tombow MONO AQUA Liquid Glue and finished it all with a couple Doodlebug Flowers, twine and wooden trim. What about you? How have you documented some of your favorite places?

My boys surprised me with how well they did this project. Pinwheels are so cute, and look so terrific with this Basic Grey paper!! They’re simple to make and come together really fast.
- Cut a 12×12 sheet of paper into 4-6 inch squares…double sided paper looks the best!
- Fold each corner to corner, diagonally, creating an X on the square.
- Cut along each fold, stopping about a half inch from the center.
- Punch a small hole on the left bottom corner of each side.
- Cut a 12″ by .5″ strip of paper, run a line of Tombow Mono Adhesive Permanent Dots along it.
- Wrap around a pencil, pulling tightly.
- Pull the holes on the bottom up to the center of the square, and secure with a brad.
- Dip the brad ends in Tombow Mono Aqua Glue, push into the pencil eraser.
Note:
Most paper pinwheels spin, but these ones do not. I thought the matching brads were way too cute to not use, and so did my boys! If you want yours to spin just use a thumb tack instead of a brad, and don’t dip it in glue prior to pushing it into the eraser.

to create this fun wall hanging, I used a “page” from Maya Road’s Wavy Layer Chipboard Book. I painted the front and back a creamy white color then sponged the edges with permanent brown ink. I hand cut a piece of Basic Grey patterned paper from their Porcelain line, sponged the edges with chocolate ink, machine stitched around the edges and adhered with Tombow’s Mono Adhesive Power Bond.
I used Tombow’s Mono Aqua Liquid Glue to adhere brown glitter to Maya Road’s David Chipboard Alphabet. I used the Mono Aqua Liquid Glue to adhere the letters to the wallhanging.
The bird and leaf is punched from one of Stampin’ Up’s punches. The flower is made by stamping several scallop circles, wadding them up in a ball and then flattening them back out. I made two holes with my piercer and threaded the vintage button with crochet thread for strength and knotted to the back. I then spritzed the flower very lightly with water and one layer at a time started scrunching the flower up around the button. After the flower was completely dry, I brushed the edges with brown ink and ahdered the flower with the liquid glue. I finished it off by adding a ribbon hanger with Maya Road’s Pink Sophisticate Striped Ribbon. Thanks for checking in! (and don’t forget to comment all this week for your chance at this week’s drawing!)

Today we’re kicking off our Maya Road-Tombow Team Up week. Be sure to check out their blog and become a fan of theirs and *ours* on facebook too and as always we’re giving away another one of our coveted prize packs to one lucky blog commenter later this week!
I found these huge magnetic clips in the dollar spot at Target last fall. I’ve seen a lot of altered ones around the internet the last year or two, and I think they’re pretty cute. I’ve had them on my fridge displaying artwork and important papers, but I thought last week it would be fun to have one personalized for each of my boys. Thanks to some cute ribbon and chipboard from Maya Road and my trusty Tombow products, this came together in less than 10 minutes. Super simple, but I can’t wait to print out some cute pictures and scour my kid’s school backpacks for things to hang on them.
- Take apart your clip, gently pulling the front away from the back and hinge.
- Measure and cut the ribbon you’re going to be using. Make sure to cut enough to go around AND knot it!
- Run lines of Tombow Mono Adhesive Permanent Dots along the clip where the ribbon will be placed.
- Tie ribbon all the way down the clip.
- Put the clip back together.
- Trim ribbon ends to desired length, use the pen tip along the edges of the ribbon to keep the ribbon from fraying.
- Color the chipboard with Tombow Dual Brush Pens.
- Put a generous amount of Tombow Mono Aqua Liquid Glue along the back of the chipboard, press into the ribbon and hold it down for a minute or two until it bonds.
So… what projects would you do with a few new Maya Road and Tombow toys?
using graphic 45 paper was a wonderful treat. the colors are vibrant and the images tantilizing. they transport you back in time…i am sure that life a few decades ago was not dull and muted, but just as vibrant as this paper!
i love graphic45
i love keeping tickets and programs and little notes.
i love pockets.
…. a perfect match.
i have done many scrapbook layouts that included pockets to keep special trinkets from events and memories.
one of my favorite classes to teach is a technique class around my intrigue with pockets.
here are a few of my ‘go to’ pocket designs….

the most basic of pockets involves a piece of paper and glue. i like to use the Tombow MONO Aqua on my pockets. on a square or rectangle apply glue to three edges, the two sides and the bottom. on the “beach bound” card i used one of the postcard beach scenes from g45′s the boardwalk collection. easy enough to cut it from the paper, apply the adhesive to three side and attach it where i wanted it. then i used the pocket to hold tags with information regarding an upcoming family reunion.

the second card is a traditional card that opens to a message on the inside, but the front has a pocket functions as a gift card holder. the boardwalk collection also has coordinating sheets with punch-outs (as do all of the g45 lines). some of those punch-outs are strips of pattern papers. i removed them from the sheet, cut them into 3 1/2″ strips and adhered them to the card front. this time, i only put the MONO Aqua on the two side edges. the middle is open all the way down, perfect for sliding a tag into the pocket. on this tag i used the Tombow MONO Removable adhseive runner to attach a gift card to the back of the tag. the top of the tag are punched circles adhered together on either side of the tag to serve as a “pull”, to remove the tag from the pocket. i personalized the inside of the card using the Tombow White Gel Pen.
have you seen all the fun video’s on graphic 45′s blog? be sure to look there for more inspiration! oh wait, did i mention i love pockets?
Do you ever make anything and love it so much you have a hard time giving it away? This is one such project. I had so much fun making this. The idea actually started out as a baby basket, but didn’t have any baby items to fill the box AND I didn’t know anyone expecting. LOL! Then I remembered this fun paper I had received from Graphic 45 with the cherry drink on it and thought it would be fun to make a Cherry Coke themed box for a friend or graduate. The G45 papers used can be found here;(aqua), (cream scallops), (polka dots), (swirls), and (circle cherry drink paper).Okay, let’s get started with all I did to make this fun box as there are a lot of details. I’m going to break up the details in numbers to make it easier to read. (I hope!)
1-The box. This is a 2-drink carrier from McDonald’s. (seriously!) We went to McDonald’s drive thru asked for 2 waters (we did order their 3 chocolate chip cookies for a dollar…okay getting off the subject here) in the 2-drink carrier. As soon as we pulled away, I had my son get the cups of water out of the carrier and put it in the back so I could use it later. I brushed all the edges of the box with tan ink. I traced the sides onto scrap cardstock to make my patterns to cover the box. After I had decided on my theme, I went through the papers (and there were a LOT of them…Thank you Graphic 45!) that I had received and chose 5 coordinating papers.
2. I cut my pieces as I wanted them on the box and stitched around each piece (except for the scallop edge) and took a tan ink pad and brushed each piece WITH the ink pad to grunge it up a bit. (For the scallop edge, I used my new favorite EK Success punch)
3. I adhered all the pieces with Tombow’s Mono Adhesive Power Bond.
4. Several elements of this box is inspired are inspired by my friend Michelle Wooderson (you SERIOUSLY have to check out her blog if you aren’t familiar with her work!) First element is using old pattern tissue for tissue paper. I found some old patterns at a shop for 5 cents each. Pretty inexpensive tissue paper! On one side of the carrier is a bottle of Coke and a Twin Bing candy. The candy has a cherry nougat center. This candy is only found in a few states. But it’s very yummy! Okay, next step… On the other side of the carrier is this cup that I found at a local store for $1. How cool is this???! The colors match my paper perfectly. I was looking all over for a Coke glass and found this AFTER my box was made. I was tickled pink…I know, doesn’t take much for this farm girl to get excited. I included a cello bag of chocolate covered cherries (if I would have had the time I would have made homemade candy, like Black Forest Fudge)

5. Another inspired item on the second side is a recipe card. Mish decorates her recipe cards so cool. I can just imagine how cool her recipe book looks! You can buy Cherry Coke, but I thought I’d Google a recipe for making your own and found this simple recipe and what fun that it uses cherry Kool-Aid…another decorating element I can use for my gift box. (hey did you know that Kool-Aid got it’s start in Hastings, Nebraska? I live some place famous. Ü) I couldn’t figure out how to decorate the front and it finally came to me to use the Kool-Aid packet somehow. Mish came up with a pocket card a few years back and recently has been making paper bag ones. BINGO! I have a BUNCH of “smaller than lunch bags” sized sacks and knew they would be the perfect size.
6. I folded the bag into a “pocket” shape and machine stitched the sides, then brushed edges with ink and inserted the cherry Kool-Aid. I used buttons to represent cherries and drew a stem. I hand cut a leaf from felt and sewed down the center. To hold the pocket to the box, I used a clothespin (yet another Mish idea…I told ya she was creative!). I cut paper to fit both sides of the clothespin and distressed with ink. Using crochet thread, I knotted two Basic Grey buttons and glued to clothespin with Mono Aqua Liquid Glue and WA-LA ~ a lovely gift basket to give!

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week and I have a fun project to share with you. I found this fun tutorial on Shannon’s blog. It’s perfect for a quick gift. I filled these with paper clips, erasers that go on the end of pencils, and candy! Ü
I used fun papers from Cosmo Cricket’s Early Bird and The Boyfriend lines. These papers are perfect for a teacher gift. I used Tombow’s MONO Adhesive DOTS, MONO AQUA Liquid Glue, MONO Glue Stick and MONO adhesive POWERBOND. For the ruffles on the chipboard circle, I just hand-sewed a running stitch along one edge of ribbon and then gathered up and knotted and placed behind the chipboard. I glued it with the MONO Aqua Liquid Glue. A great tip on how I cut the curve for the carton closer flaps is that I just half inserted my piece into an oval punch shown below. It made it super easy and come together great.

Spring Break at our house is in full swing and of course I have tons of projects to keep my munchkins busy. Thankfully, a few friends joined in the fun which always surprisingly makes it easier to teach the kids. Earth Day is Thursday so we had to pull something inspired by nature and since it was all about the girls today the only nature inspired thing they were willing to come up with was flowers! Easy enough, what girl doesn’t love flowers?!
Supplies;
Felt Scraps
Small Buttons
Needle and Thread
Hair Clips
MONO AQUA Liquid Glue
1. Have the kids cut out two small (about 1-1 1/2 inch) circles out of coordinating felt. It doesn’t have to be perfect, nor do they have to match up. translation? perfect for little hands!
2. (grown-ups) cut felt in a spiral pattern starting on the outside and working inward until you have a circle about the size of your button. I like to cut the two out together so the spirals match somewhat.
3. The kids can add a few dabs of MONO AQUA liquid Glue to attach the two layers and roll the strips of felt around the center moving outward and keeping the ends up a bit. Add Glue to the ends. It helps for the kids to see it actually done in person first but, once they get a visual, they catch on quick!
4. Add button and let dry (about 15 mins. although for the kids it felt like an eternity… so we just made more!)
5. Attach with a needle and thread (for durability) to a favorite headband or hair clip. Let dry completely and enjoy!
